In general, the normal period of inability to conceive is one year for young couples. For older patients, HSG is performed when the period is 6 months or less to determine the right treatment method. Vaginismus treatment is a cognitive behavioral treatment method of sexual therapy. During cognitive exercises in sexual therapy, the woman and the couple are educated on their sexuality and given correct information on their bodies and sexual organs. Any harmful information or beliefs on these subjects are corrected. It is possible for people to collect healthy information on their sexuality, to evaluate their own characteristics correctly, to express their preferences and to have healthy sexual communication as a couple.
Behavioral exercises help to create a positive memory for the body and redirect the focus of sexual act from fear to pleasure. It takes time for both cognitive change, the change of thoughts and beliefs, and the change of behavior to be permanent for the patients.
The time of healing is different for each couple, depending on the severity of vaginismus, the duration of the disease and underlying causes, and the quality of communication between the couple, Usually a full treatment is provided within 4-8 sessions and the duration of the treatment varies between two to six weeks.
